Photo to Coloring Page
Photo to Coloring Page is a free tool that turns a photo into black-and-white line art you can print and color. It uses classic edge detection, not AI, with sliders for detail, line thickness and noise, and it exports a Letter-size PNG or PDF. Your photo stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Turn a photo of your kids, pets, house, or favorite place into black-and-white line art you can print and color. Use the sliders to fine-tune the lines, then download a Letter-size PNG or PDF. It's free, there's no sign-up, and your photo stays on your device.

Clear, well-lit photos with a simple background work best.

Both downloads are sized for US Letter paper (8.5 ร 11 in) with half-inch margins. Wide photos are placed in landscape.
Heads up: This is an algorithmic filter, not AI. It finds edges with classic image processing (grayscale, blur, edge detection, and thresholding), so it can't invent clean cartoon outlines the way an AI illustration tool might. Results depend a lot on the photo, and a little tweaking of the sliders goes a long way.
How to Turn a Photo into a Coloring Page
Step by step
- Upload a photo. Pick one with a clear subject and good lighting.
- Choose a line style. "Clean outlines" traces the strongest edges and works for most photos. "Sketchy lines" gives a softer, hand-drawn look with more small strokes.
- Adjust the sliders. Lower the detail for younger kids (bigger spaces to color), raise the line thickness so crayons stay inside the lines, and increase noise cleanup if you see speckles.
- Download and print. Choose PDF for the most reliable printing, or PNG if you want to edit the page further.
Is this photo to coloring page converter really free?
Yes. There's no watermark, no account, and no limit on how many pages you make. The tool runs entirely in your web browser, which is also why it's free to run.
How does it work? Is it AI?
It isn't AI. The tool converts your photo to grayscale, smooths it with a Gaussian blur, and then detects edges with either a difference of Gaussians or the Sobel operator. It keeps the strongest edges, removes tiny specks, and thickens what's left into printable lines. Because it only follows the light and dark areas in your photo, it won't add details that aren't there or "redraw" faces the way generative AI can.
Which photos make the best coloring pages?
- A single subject that fills most of the frame, like a pet, a person, or a toy
- Plain or blurry backgrounds (busy backgrounds turn into lots of extra lines)
- Good, even lighting without harsh shadows across faces
- Sharp focus. Blurry photos produce broken, faint lines
Cropping the photo tightly before you upload it is the easiest way to get a cleaner page.
Why are there too many lines, or not enough?
Too many lines usually means the detail slider is too high or the background is busy. Lower the detail and raise noise cleanup. If faces or edges are disappearing, raise the detail or try the "Sketchy lines" style.
What size will it print?
Downloads are laid out for US Letter paper (8.5 ร 11 inches) with half-inch margins, so they print correctly at "Actual size" or "Fit to page." The PNG is 300 DPI and the PDF holds a high-resolution image, so lines stay crisp.
Is my photo private?
Yes. Your photo is processed by your own browser and is never uploaded to a server. Close the tab and it's gone. See our Privacy Policy.
