Video to GIF Converter

Video to GIF is a free converter that turns a video clip into an animated GIF. It works with any video your browser can play, usually MP4, WebM or MOV. Trim the clip, set the frame rate, width and looping, preview it and see the exact file size. One click shrinks a GIF under Discord's 10 MB limit. Everything happens in your browser, so your video is never uploaded.

Turn a video clip into an animated GIF without uploading it anywhere. Trim the part you want, choose the frame rate, size, and looping, preview the result, and download. If your GIF is too big for Discord, one click shrinks it under 10 MB.

How to Convert a Video to a GIF

Step by step

  1. Choose a video from your computer or phone.
  2. Trim it. Drag the sliders or type start and end times. You can also pause the preview and click "Use current time."
  3. Pick the frame rate and width. 15 fps at 480 px is a good balance of smoothness and size.
  4. Click Make GIF and watch the progress bar. Longer clips take longer.
  5. Check the size and download. If it's over 10 MB, use "Fit under 10 MB (Discord)."

How do I make a high-quality GIF from a video?

GIFs can only show 256 colors per frame, so quality comes down to a few choices. Keep "256 colors" and the "Per frame" palette for the best color accuracy. Use 15 to 24 fps for smooth motion, and keep the width at 480 to 640 px. Above that, file sizes grow fast. Short, steady clips with little camera shake also compress much better.

How do I make a GIF small enough for Discord?

Discord currently limits uploads to 10 MB for accounts without Nitro. After your GIF is made, the tool shows its exact file size. If it's too big, click Fit under 10 MB (Discord). It lowers the width first, then the frame rate, and then the number of colors, re-encoding until the GIF fits. Trimming the clip shorter is the most effective fix of all, since every second adds more frames.

Which video formats are supported?

The tool uses your browser's built-in video player to read frames, so it supports whatever your browser can play. MP4 (H.264) and WebM work almost everywhere, and MOV files from iPhones work in Safari and usually in Chrome. Some formats, such as HEVC in Firefox or AVI and MKV files with unusual codecs, may not open. If that happens, try another browser or convert the video to MP4 first.

Why does this tool use the browser instead of ffmpeg?

We capture frames with your browser's own video decoder and encode the GIF with gifenc, a tiny JavaScript encoder. The alternative, ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, is a download of more than 25 MB and needs special security headers to run quickly. This approach loads instantly, works on phones, and keeps everything on your device. The trade-off is that only formats your browser can play are supported.

What do the loop options mean?

"Loop forever" is what most people expect from a GIF. "Play once" stops on the last frame, and "Play 3 times" plays the clip three times and then stops. Some apps, including many chat apps, always loop GIFs regardless of this setting.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Frames are read and encoded entirely in your browser. Your video never touches a server, which also means there's no waiting for uploads. See our Privacy Policy.
