Gift Certificate Maker

Gift Certificate Maker is a free tool for small businesses to print gift certificates. Choose one of six templates and add your business name, logo, amount or service, expiration and terms. Every certificate gets its own code, random with your prefix (without look-alike characters) or numbered in order, with an optional QR code that holds only the code. It prints three per Letter or A4 page with cut lines and exports a CSV redemption log. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Print gift certificates for your salon, restaurant, studio or shop. Every certificate gets its own code, so a photocopy can't be redeemed twice, and you get a redemption log to open in Excel or print and check off. Add your logo, the amount or service, an expiration date and your terms, and print three to a page.

How to Make Gift Certificates

Step by step

  1. Pick a template and enter your business name, the amount or service, and your terms.
  2. Add your logo and an expiration date if you use one.
  3. Choose random codes or numbers in order, a prefix, and how many certificates to print.
  4. Download the PDF to print, and the redemption log, a CSV file with every code on the PDF.
  5. Print, cut and sell. When a certificate comes back, find its code in the log and mark it redeemed.

Is this gift certificate maker free?

Yes. It's free with no sign-up and no watermark. The certificates, codes and log are made in your browser, and nothing about your business is uploaded. See our Privacy Policy.

Why does every certificate have its own code?

A unique code lets you tell a real certificate from a copy, and it lets you record each one when it's redeemed so it can't be used twice. Random codes are hard to guess. They use only letters and numbers that are easy to read, with no 0 and O or 1 and I, so customers and staff don't mix them up. Choose "Numbered in order" if you prefer GC-0001, GC-0002 and so on.

How do I track which certificates have been used?

Open the CSV log in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers. It has a row for every code with the value and expiration date, and empty columns for the recipient, the date it was redeemed and who redeemed it. Keep the log safe: anyone with the list of codes could make certificates that look real. Click New codes before each print run so codes are never reused.

What does the QR code contain?

Only the certificate number, as plain text. It doesn't link to a website and doesn't track anything. Scan it with your phone's camera or any barcode scanner to read the code quickly at the register. QR codes are made with the open-source qrcode-generator library, and the fonts are free fonts under the SIL Open Font License.

Can gift certificates have an expiration date?

It depends on where you are. In the U.S., the federal Credit CARD Act generally requires gift certificates that you sell to stay valid for at least five years from the date they were issued. Some states, such as California, ban expiration dates on most gift certificates, and many states have their own rules about fees and unclaimed balances. Free promotional certificates often follow different rules. Check your state's laws before you set an expiration date. This tool doesn't give legal advice.

What paper should I use?

Print on white or cream cardstock (65 to 110 lb) for a sturdy certificate. Each Letter or A4 page holds three certificates. Print at 100% scale and cut along the dashed lines with a paper cutter for clean edges.
