Image to Text Converter
Image to Text is a free OCR tool that extracts text from photos, scans and screenshots. Drop in JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC images, or paste a screenshot, and edit, copy or download the text with a confidence score for each image. It uses the open-source Tesseract engine running in your browser, so there's no upload, no sign-up and no limit. It reads English text.

Turn a photo, scan or screenshot into text you can copy and edit. Drop in as many images as you want, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). Your images never leave your browser: the OCR engine runs on your device, so it's safe for receipts, contracts and other private documents.

How to Extract Text from an Image
Step by step
- Drop one or more images onto the box above, click it to choose files, or copy a screenshot and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac) anywhere on the page.
- Wait a few seconds per image. The first image takes a little longer while the OCR engine loads.
- Check the text and fix any mistakes right in the text box.
- Click Copy or Download .txt for one image, or use Copy all text and Download all for everything.
Is this image to text converter free and unlimited?
Yes. There's no sign-up, no captcha, no daily limit and no cap on the number of images. The text recognition runs on your own device, so it doesn't cost us anything per image, and you can convert as many as you need.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Your images are read and recognized inside your browser by Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine that this site serves to your browser along with its English language data. Neither your images nor the extracted text are sent anywhere or saved. You can confirm this in your browser's developer tools under the Network tab. See our Privacy Policy and the Tesseract license.
How accurate is the OCR?
For clear screenshots and scans of printed text, accuracy is usually very high. Each result shows a confidence score from 0 to 100%. Accuracy drops with blurry or angled photos, low light, very small text, unusual fonts, and text over busy backgrounds. Handwriting is not recognized well. Always proofread important text such as numbers, names and amounts.
How do I get better results from a photo?
- Hold the camera straight above the page and fill the frame with the text.
- Use bright, even light and avoid shadows and glare.
- Crop away anything that isn't text before you add the image.
- For screenshots, zoom in first so the text is at least 12 pixels tall.
Which languages are supported?
English. Text in other languages that use the Latin alphabet, such as Spanish or French, is often readable, but accented letters may come out wrong. Other scripts, such as Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic, aren't supported.
Can I convert a screenshot to text?
Yes. On Windows, press Windows+Shift+S, select an area, then click this page and press Ctrl+V. On a Mac, press Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4 to copy a screenshot to the clipboard, then press Cmd+V here. The screenshot is recognized right away.
Can it read iPhone HEIC photos and PDFs?
HEIC photos work: they're decoded in your browser first. PDFs aren't supported directly. If your PDF has selectable text, copy it from a PDF reader. If it's a scan, save the pages as images (for example with our PDF to Long Image tool) and add them here.
What do the line break options do?
Keep line breaks keeps every line exactly as it appears in the image, which is best for receipts, addresses, lists and code. Join lines into paragraphs merges wrapped lines into flowing paragraphs and rejoins words split with a hyphen, which is best for pasting book or article text into a document.
