XMind Viewer
XMind Viewer is a free tool that opens .xmind mind map files in your browser without the XMind app. It reads files from current XMind versions and from XMind 8, shows every sheet with notes, labels, markers, links and images, and lets you expand and collapse branches and search. Export the map as a PNG, PDF or SVG, or as a Markdown, text or OPML outline. Your file is never uploaded.

It reads files from current XMind versions and from XMind 8, shows every sheet, and lets you expand and collapse branches, search, and read notes and links. Questions About Opening XMind Files
How to use the XMind Viewer, step by step?
- Open your file: drop an .xmind file on the box above, or click it and pick the file. On a phone, tap the box and choose the file from Files or your downloads.
- Pick a sheet: if the workbook has more than one sheet, each one shows up as a tab above the map.
- Move around: drag to pan, scroll or pinch to zoom, and press Fit to see the whole map again.
- Open and close branches: click a topic to fold or unfold it, or use Expand all and Collapse all. Folded topics show how many topics are hidden.
- Read the details: the topic you click shows its notes, labels and link in the panel next to the map. Topics with notes have a small page icon.
- Find something: type in the search box to highlight every matching topic. Press Enter to jump to the next match.
- Save it: download the sheet as a PNG, PDF or SVG, or as a Markdown, text or OPML outline.
Can I open an .xmind file without XMind?
Yes. That's what this page is for. An .xmind file is a zip archive with the map stored inside as JSON (current XMind versions) or XML (XMind 8 and older). The viewer unpacks it in your browser and draws the map, so you don't have to install anything or create an account. It's handy when someone sends you a mind map and you just want to read it.
Which XMind versions does it support?
Files from XMind 2020 and later (including XMind Zen and the current XMind app) and files from XMind 8 and earlier both work. The viewer looks inside the file and picks the right format on its own.
What parts of the map are shown?
- Every sheet, every topic and folded branches
- Notes, labels, links, and markers like priority, task progress, flags and stars (shown as small badges)
- Images inside topics
- Relationship lines, boundaries and floating topics, drawn simply
The viewer uses its own clean style, so your map's theme, colors, fonts and custom shapes aren't copied. Summaries, attached files, audio notes and equations aren't shown. Org charts, fishbone diagrams and timelines are drawn as a regular mind map, with the same topics in the same order.
Can I open a password-protected XMind file?
No. When you set a password in XMind, the map inside the file is encrypted, and this viewer can't decrypt it. Open the file in XMind, remove the password (or export a copy without one), and then open that copy here.
Can I convert XMind to PDF, PNG or Markdown?
Yes, for free and without a watermark. PNG is saved at twice the screen size so the text stays sharp, SVG can be scaled to any size, and PDF puts the whole sheet on one page sized to fit the map. Markdown gives you a heading and nested bullet points with notes, which pastes nicely into Notion, Obsidian or a document. The text outline uses tabs for each level, and OPML opens in most outliners.
The PNG, PDF and SVG files show the branches you have open at the moment, so expand everything first if you want the full map. The PDF is an image of the map, so its text can't be selected; use the SVG or Markdown if you need the text.
Does it work with Chinese, Japanese or Korean mind maps?
Yes. Topic text is shown in whatever language it was written in, using the fonts already on your computer or phone. Long lines wrap neatly for both English and East Asian text.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On iPhone, iPad and Android, pinch to zoom, drag with one finger to move, and tap a topic to open or close it. The notes panel moves below the map on small screens.
Is my mind map uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and drawn by JavaScript running in your browser, and nothing about it is sent to a server. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working even if you go offline. See the Privacy Policy for details.
